Remember the days when a handshake was good enough and a person's word was binding? Well, that might be okay when you're telling your kid you'll take him or her to a hockey game or to a show, but when dealing in commercial enterprises, it's not enough.
When two parties make a contract, they voluntarily create obligations for themselves. For example, when you buy a ticket to a sporting event or for a day on a ski hill, there's often a disclaimer on the back of the ticket that says that the company cannot be held liable for any accidents on the premises. When you buy and use the ticket, you might have agreed to the conditions that have been stated. Or have you? Unless the ticket specifies exactly what situations apply, it might mean absolutely nothing.
When you buy a company or enter into any number of business undertakings, things can get complex. The agreement you sign likely contains a number of contractual obligations. Some of these are to your benefit and others have to be completed by you.
