Kamloops is strategically located at the junction of the Coquihalla, Trans-Canada and Yellowhead Highways, as well as the CN and CP Railways, and is only a 3-hour drive to/from Vancouver. It is also the site of the convergence of the North and South Thompson Rivers. All community services and facilities are readily available as well as most of the more popular retail outlets. There are also many opportunities for small business development. The Kamloops Airport has recently approved the installation of a new glide path, allowing for an increase in the number of flights and airlines servicing it. Real estate is still affordable with everything from condos to city housing to small or large acreages to recreational property, for you to purchase your dream home. In fact, Kamloops is the most affordable city in North America in which to live and raise a family according to the May 2002 affordability index.
Kamloops and the surrounding region is one of British Columbia’s best kept secrets and one soon discovers that the majority of those living here love it and have no plans to leave. The climate is semi-arid with lots of sunshine and spectacular scenery. The lifestyle tends to be family-oriented, relaxed and friendly, and is attractive to both young families and retirees. It is an outstanding place to raise a family. There are numerous community events in the region, both in the city and surrounding areas, such as the Merritt Mountain Music Festival (a short 45 minute drive); Family Day, nightly summertime musical venues and other events in Riverside Park; live theatrical productions at the Sagebrush and Pavillion Theatres; a large annual antique car show; the annual Nicola Valley Cattle Drive; Sunday horse racing at the Exhibition grounds; and various fairs, festivals and professional rodeos, to name just a few. Kamloops is also the home of the Kamloops Blazers, from whom numerous NHL players have been recruited, and is considered the tournament capital of Canada for the many sporting events that take place here.
Perhaps the most notable attraction of Kamloops is the wide variety of and easy accessibility to outdoor recreation. Sun Peaks offers excellent skiing, has won awards for best grooming, and continues to develop into a top-notch, year-round destination resort with numerous summer activities such as an excellent golf course, world-renowned mountain bike trails and competitions, hiking, white water rafting, and much more. Harper Mountain, a mere 15 minutes from town, provides a smaller but enjoyable family-oriented ski experience, including night skiing. Cross-country trails are available at Sun Peaks, Harper and Stake Lake. There are many lakes in the area to enjoy all types of water sports, camping and fishing as well as many lakeside and riverside resorts. The region offers some of the finest golf courses in Canada with varying degrees of difficulty and spectacular scenery.
